These gents were some real characters. You can probably gather that just from looking at this picture, haha! I almost hate to ruin this funny story by trying to put my memory of this moment down on paper. Some great memories are like that. Once you try to articulate it to someone else, the “magic of that moment” just doesn’t seem to be expressed adequately. Nevertheless, I will try to share this funny memory of mine when I suddenly had the urge to buy a fishing pole while in Sidab, one of the older coastal areas of Muscat just beyond Muttrah. Once I stepped into the shop, I felt like it was Comedy Night at the Apollo as these guys really cracked us up. This is the closest I’ve been to an Omani version of the Three Stooges. Maybe even Abbott and Costello for any of you older ones out there who remember their ancient bits of humor. The man pictured in the centre was the funniest of them all. I’m going to have to go out on a limb here and imagine that he had been partaking of some strong spirits as the smell and effects were clear enough to me and my friend. We wanted a fishing pole. Simple enough. Well, that guy had us there at least 30 minutes as he tried looping the fishing line incorrectly through the fish eyes on the rod and no matter who protested, he would have no help. The poor gentleman on the left got the brunt of his madness as he was occasionally slapped by the “fishing pole expert” for daring to question his methods. The owner on the far right kept apologizing for the delay and had to keep his inebriated friend in line, especially when it came to harassing his poor worker. It wasn’t until we were leaving 45 minutes later that we came to realize that the guy who took control of the whole scene, telling us one odd story after another, did not even work there. He was a neighbor who simply decided to follow us into the shop.
